Big ships now have the following additional/modified stats:

  • Rations: Replaces power of the ship. Functionally identical to existing system, in that rations are consumed when you move the ship or use ship skills. Rations can also be used for certain actions like gathering food on islands. If you run out of rations the ship will move slowly. Current 1 ration unit is equivalent to 1000 power from before.
  • Sailor cabins: This affects how many sailors can board your ship. Sailors may occupy more than 1 cabin.

Upgraded ships will allow cannons to be controlled by the captain while steering, but the cannons can no longer be used directly by players. Food, weight capacity, inventory and sailor rooms will also increase.

1.2. Epheria Caravel/Epheria Galleass

The Epheria Caravel/Galleass are upgrades of the Sailboat/Frigate respectively.

1.2.1. Upgrading your ship

Upgrade process can be performed at the wharf manager. The base ship needs to be checked-in first. After the upgrade the old ship will be converted to the upgraded version.

Left: Items to purchase from Falasi

Right: Enhancement material needed for the “old” gear

Notes:

  • Falasi is located in Port Epheria.
  • Upgrade process cannot be reversed once completed
  • The green gear involved in the upgrade of the old ships to new ships use a different enhancement material and appears to have a higher enhancement success rate than regular ship gear.
  • The green gear for the upgraded ships can be purchased from Falasi.
  • Blue gear for the upgraded ships can be crafted from the Ship Part Workshop in Port Epheria.
  • Parts for new ships will not degrade on enhancement failure.
  • The old ship gear cannot be used on the upgraded ship.
  • You cannot use boatman on the new ships yet.
  • The upgraded ship cannon damage will be reduced against World boss.
  • Processing 증축용 흑연 주괴, 증축용 목재, and 증축용 접착제 do not appear to contribute to processing EXP and seems to only yield 1 item.
  • The Caravel and Galleass were previously known as Trader and Destroyer respectively.

1.2.3. Enhancement Materials

bdo ship enhancement
new black desert boat enhancement materials

Gear for the new ships will use new enhancement materials.

Enhancement at +0~5 for normal green/blue equipment uses item 온기를 품은 블랙스톤. This item can also be obtained from Khan (guild boss).

Enhancement at +6~10 uses item 한기가 서린 블랙스톤.

Enhancement items can be purchased using the new ocean currency obtained through barter and can also be obtained through material barters..

Note:

  • The enhancement material used for upgrading the “old” gear involved in the upgrade of Sailboat/Frigate to Caravel/Galleass uses 신록을 머금은 블랙스톤 instead of the above two items. To obtain this enhancement item:
    1. Obtain stage-1 barter items from bartering.
    2. Exchange these items with NPCs located at Velia/Epheria near the Wharf manager for a certificate.
    3. Exchange the certificates with Ravina located at Crow’s Nest.

1.3. Cog

The Cog can be crafted at the shipyard in Port Epheria. Unlike the other big ships, this mount cannot be repaired (similar to fishing boat). You can receive a free Cog from the sailing main quest. You can use the breezy sail skill on this ship.

There are two variants of the cog, both have identical stats.

  • You can use a harpoon on this ship.
  • Lifespan and durability of the Cog was increased in 30 August KR update.
  • The speed/acceleration and lifespan of the Cog was increased in 4 September KR update.

1.4. Batali Sailboat

The Batali Sailboat (바탈리 범선) is a budget ship that can be purchased at the Dancing Marlin tavern in Velia for 10mil silvers. This ship can be repaired, unlike the old Bartali sailboat.

  • You cannot use ship skills on this ship (i.e. no ramming).
  • Previously on global-lab this boat was called the “Dancing Marlin”. On KR release the boat was renamed to Batali Sailboat.
  • All stats for these ships are identical to their parent ships, except for the addition of the cannons and cannon reload time.
  • It is cheaper to build the Epheria Sailboat/Frigate at the shipyard compared to upgrading from the Bartali Sailboat, however the Bartali Sailboat upgrade is likely faster if you have the materials ready.

1.5. Epheria Carrack

The carrack is a new ship that has 18 cannons (9 per side).

There are four variants of the Carrack.

1.6. Improved Sailboat/Frigate

The regular Epheria sailboat/frigate can be upgraded to an “improved” ship which also supports captain controlled cannons. This ship could also be upgraded to the Epheria Caravel/Galleass.

The improved Epheria Sailboat adds 2 cannons to each side that is captain controlled (120 cannonballs), while the improved Epheria Frigate adds 4 cannons to each side (150 cannonballs).

Notes:

  • The new ships were added in an off-the-norm maintenance on 30 August.
  • Materials for upgrading these ships to the Epheria Caravel/Galleass is not known yet.
  • The improved sailboat has a cannonball limit of 120, while the improved frigate has a cannonball limit of 150.
  • You can use the regular Epheria Sailboat/Frigate ship parts on these boats.
  • You can use Epheria Sailboat/Frigate boatman for these ships.
  • There was a glitch in the past where the on deck cannons are visible on these boats. The cannons are actually not mountable.

2. New Ship system

When using a big ship, you’ll notice there are some additional new UI elements:

2.1. Ship Rations

Ship rations replaces ship power, and is consumed whenever you move the ship, use ship skills, or interact with the island trade/barter system. Ship rations should not be confused with sailor food, which is a separate system involving food items.

Similar to when your ship has no power, if you run out of rations, the ship will move very slowly, or if against the current/wind, it may not move at all. You’ll also be unable to use ship skills when you are out of rations.

To restore ship rations, you need to visit a wharf manager, take out your ship, and request to refuel the ship.

You can also restore rations using ordinary food items if you are out in the seas. Food items with higher rarity will restore a larger amount of rations. Worker/sailor food cannot be used to restore ship rations.

Notes:

  • It is observed that rations consumes at the same rate as the existing ship power.
  • You can have your sailors gather rations from islands to replenish a small amount of rations.
  • Rations will no longer be restored by breezy crystals. Instead these items restore cannonballs.

2.2. Cannons

If your ship comes with cannons that can be directly controlled by the captain (upgraded Sailboat/Frigate, or Carrack), you’ll be able to fire cannons via LMB/RMB. Unlike the old system, you do not need to purchase cannonballs, after ship refuel your ship will automatically have 300 cannonballs if it’s a sailboat, 600 if it’s a frigate.

If your ship has 2 cannons per side (upgraded sailboat), you’ll fire 2 cannonballs per volley. If you have 4 cannons (upgraded frigate), you’ll fire 4 cannonballs at once, i.e. maximum 25 volleys after refill. Cannon cooldown is shared by both left and right cannons, so you cannot fire left and right cannons in quick succession.

When out in the seas, you’ll be able to restore cannonballs using Breezy Crystals (2 cannonballs) and Origin of Winds (8 cannonballs).

Note:

  • Cannon max range is around 4~5 grid squares in the 3d minimap.
  • Cannons are observed to shoot “lower” compared to Sailboat/Frigate cannons. This may impact the maximum range or probability of collision if there are other objects (e.g. player’s ships) nearby.
  • You will be unable to dismount from ship while the cannon is in cooldown.
  • You cannot restore more cannonballs than the ship’s rated capacity using Origin of Winds.

2.3. Current/Wind

The ocean current and wind are additional environment effects that affect your ship’s speed. If you sail along the current/wind your ship will move faster, on the other hand, if you sail against them, your ship may barely move or even move backwards.

Wind is stronger further away from the continent. Current applies when you are a certain distance away from land/islands, i.e. there will be no current if you are near land. Current and wind direction are shown as small arrows, ideally you’d want the arrow to be at the bottom.

Among the two, current has the strongest effect on the ship speed, however strong winds will also have the ability to push back your ship if your ship isn’t moving fast enough and you are sailing against them.

Notes:

  • Current appears to be unchanging and depends on position (e.g. on the west of Velia the currents will typically flow away from the port, while in the east, the currents usually flow towards the port).
  • Wind can change more variably.
  • If the wind speed exceeds a certain amount, the icon color will change from white to a different color:

2.4. Inventory management

Inventory can be managed at the wharf manager. You can also directly manage inventory of your ship for non-barter items.

Inventory

Notes:

  • You can transfer directly from town storage to your ship in inventory management.
  • In the past equipment was also managed at the Wharf manager, however this was removed in the 4 September update in favor of allowing players to directly change ship equipment without visiting a wharf.

2.5. Stamina

Using ship skills now consume stamina. Stamina is gradually restored over time.

When stamina is depleted, you’ll be unable to use ship skills, functioning as a global skill cooldown.

2.6. Folding/Unfolding Sails

The sail can be folded/unfolded by pressing a button on the ship’s speed meter.

A folded sail will cause the ship to be unaffected by wind which will be useful for sailing against the wind.

Notes:

  • You can also fold/unfold the sail while moving. Your ship do not need to be stationary.
  • There is a 5 second cooldown between folding/unfolding.

2.7. Other changes

  • Ram skill while now deal damage to your ship proportional to the amount of hits that landed.
  • You can use breezy sailing while auto-pathing.
  • The “ship call” function will now teleport the ship to you if you are a certain distance away.
  • Ghost ships no longer prevent you from controlling the ship immediately.
  • The sea monster loot has been adjusted, and no longer reward as much guild funds as before.
    • Regular sea monsters (e.g. Heraku, Ocean Stalker, Nine Shark, Candidum) have the normal Sea monster neidans and their exclusive drops (e.g. Heraku’s Spike) replaced with items that are equivalent in value to the Young Sea Monster’s counterpart.
      • E.g. before: 1x Sea Monster’s Neidan (100k guild funds), after: New Sea Monster’s Neidan (10k silver).
      • 10x of each items can be heated to yield the normal version, similar to young sea monster drops.
    • 100mil items observed to be unchanged for now.
    • Pirate ships have the number of pirate coins reduced to around 10% of its original value.

3. Sailors

Before you can hire sailors, you’ll need to complete a quest chain from black spirit that introduces you to the new sailing system.

There is a limit on the number of sailors you can recruit, which can be increased by using an item awarded from quests. The main tutorial questline rewards a few of these, and also gives a free sailor.

Recruiting sailors requires a contract, which costs 3mil. The contract can be purchased at both inns in Velia (from the innkeeper) or from Falasi at Port Epheria.

Recruitable sailors can be found in Velia (most are in the old inn) and around Port Epheria (near the beached whale).

Each hiring attempt can fail, and if you fail to hire a sailor, the contract will still be consumed and the sailor will walk out, which prevents you from re-attempting to hire that sailor.

Sailors you have recruited can be assigned to the ship via sailor management at the wharf manager. A sailor may demand a certain amount of cabins, which limits how many sailors you can assign on a ship. Additionally, you can feed sailors through the sailor management window to recover loyalty.

You cannot use worker food (e.g. beer) to feed sailors. You’ll need to use Chowder (차우더) instead. Recipe for chowder:

Ingredients (Cooking)Where to get
Dried Pearl Oyster Flesh x1Drying:

  • Giant Pearl Oyster x1
Pepper x2Farming
Pork x2From boars.
Milk x1Milking cows.

Exchange cooking byproduct.

Teff Bread x1Cooking:

  • Teff Flour x5
  • Mineral Water x3
  • Leavening Agent x2
  • Salt x2

There is also an alternative sailor food 건포도 빵 (Raisin Bread) which can be bought from Islin Bartali. This food recovers 1 sailor condition point instead of 10 from Chowder.

When a sailor runs out of food, the sailor may get sick. If the sailor is sick, the stats provided by the sailor will no longer be applied. You’ll need to use a Potion of Regeneration (재생의 묘약) to recover the sailor’s health.

Ingredients (Alchemy)Where to get
만드라고라의 정수 (Essence of Mandragora) x1Purchase with sea coins.
Essence of Magic Power x1Alchemy:

  • Fruit of Magic Power x2
  • Dry Mane Grass x3
  • Birch Sap x4
  • Powder of Darkness x2
Oil of regeneration x1Alchemy:

  • Legendary Beast’s Blood
  • Red Tree Lump
  • Fruit of Crimson Flame
  • Powder of Crevice
Troll Blood x2From Trolls

Notes:

  • You cannot re-assign sailors if the boat is on a different wharf.
  • The sailors that previously rejected your recruitment offer may not necessarily appear the following day.
  • It seems the available sailors varies between the time of the day.
  • Sailors gain EXP when you defeat sea monsters.

4. Island Interactions

You can perform interactions with islanders while on your ship. Simply approach the NPC and a button will appear which you can click to show additional actions.

4.1. Barter

If you have items the islander is interested in, you’ll be allowed to perform a trade. You can only trade items present in the ship’s inventory. The trade information resets every 4 hours. There is a limit of 100 trades per reset.

bdo barter

You can view barter information from the world map.

bdo barter map

Each trade route begins with a mainland item. These are possible items that may be selected:

  • Bag of muddy water
  • Red tree lump
  • Bloody tree knot
  • Rough mud crystal
  • Rough red crystal
  • Rough green crystal
  • Rough black crystal
  • Rough blue crystal
  • Noc ore
  • Lead ore
  • Old Tree Bark
  • Monk’s branch
  • Spirit’s Leaf
  • Powder of Time
  • Powder of Earth
  • Powder of Crevice
  • Powder of Flame
  • Powder of Darkness

  • Fruit of Magic Power
  • Fruit of Abundance
  • Cloud Mushroom
  • Elder Tree Sap
  • Acacia Sap
  • White Cedar Sap
  • Grilled Bird Meat
  • Beer
  • Vinegar
  • Sinner’s Blood
  • Aloe
  • Pistachio
  • Star anise
  • Essence of liquor
  • Knitting Yarn
  • Flax Thread
  • Wool
  • Wolf Hide
  • Feather Wolf Hide
  • Wild Grass

Note: The above are color coded by which box they are obtained on global-lab.

Exchanging a mainland item yields a Stage-1 barter item, which can be exchanged for a Stage-2 barter item and so on. At the end of the trade route is typically sea coins.

A sample trade route (the routes will not be as neatly presented in-game)

You can perform the same exchange repeatedly at the same islander provided you have sufficient materials, your ship has sufficient inventory space/weight, and you have not exceeded your trade limit. Some trades may have additional restrictions.

Barter items tend to be heavy (e.g. 800~1000 LT), so keeping track of your ship’s inventory is particularly important. Stage-5 items do not stack so take note of your inventory slots when exchanging at this stage.

The most important reward from bartering is the sea coins, which can be obtained by exchanging a stage-5 barter item. This exchange can only be performed once per trade route until barter window resets (i.e. every 4 hours). sea coins can be used to purchase materials for ship upgrades or ship parts. Barter window resets at a fixed time similar to regular trade resets.

There are different types of trades involved.

Trade TypeNotes
NormalThis trade exchange materials for barter items 1-tier higher.

Land->Stage 1: 1 exchange.

Stage 1->2: 2 exchanges.

Stage 2->3: 4 exchanges.

Stage 3->4: 6 exchanges.

Stage 4->5: 4 exchanges.

Stage 5-> Ocean coin: 1 exchange.

LandThis trade exchanges items you can buy from NPCs for land items used in barter.

Typically allows 2 exchanges.

Old Moon Guild CarrackThis trade exchanges items at the same tier. Normally land items or stage-5 items are exchanged.

Typically only allows 1 exchange.

SpecialThis trade allows exchange of barter items with one that is two tiers up.

E.g. exchange stage-1 barter item to stage-3

MaterialsThis trade exchanges items for materials involved in ship upgrade/parts.

You can usually perform 1~4x of this exchange.

Higher-tier trades unlock with more trades.

Stage-2 materials: Materials for upgrading to Caravel/Galleass. Enhancement material for +0~+5 ship parts.

Stage-3 materials: Materials for ship parts. Enhancement material for +6~+10. Materials for upgrade to Caravel.

Stage-4 materials: Materials for carrack.

Stage-5 materials: Materials for upgrade to Carrack.

Sea CoinsTypically the last barter at the end of a trade route, this trade rewards sea coins.

You can usually perform 1x of this exchange.

Barter items at stage-3 and above can be sold for silvers.

ItemSilvers
Stage-31mil
Stage-42mil
Stage-55mil

Additional trade routes are unlocked with more trades. The new routes will be available upon the next barter reset.

  • At the beginning, one trade route, and the Old Moon Guild Carrack trade will be available.
  • Second trade route and stage-2 material barter unlocks after 10 trades. Land trade will also begin appearing.
  • Third trade route and stage-3 material barter unlocks after 40~50 trades.
  • Fourth trade route and stage-4 material barter unlocks after 70~110 trades.
  • Fifth trade route unlocks after 150+ trades.
  • Special barter offers may begin appearing after 140 trades.
  • Note: The maximum number of routes is not yet known. The exact requirements for unlocking a trade route is not known, but appears to be influenced by the type of trades made in the past.

Special trades will allow you to obtain items with a high silver value (typically worth 100mil silvers).

Notes:

  • The quantity of sea coins that can be obtained is random, however some sea coin barters reward substantially more coins than others:
    • Hakoven island is noted to have the most sea coins rewarded.
    • Islands in Margoria tend to reward more coins than those near mainland.
  • You will typically end up with left-over items when bartering. You can either sell them for silvers (if stage-3 or higher) or save them for the next barter window.
  • Some barters may not necessarily be part of any trade route. E.g. the old moon carrack barter which exchanges Stage-5 items for another is typically not part of a trade route.
  • Barter does not require a sailor.
  • You no longer need to complete the sailing main questline to barter.
  • Stage-5 items cannot be stacked unlike the other barter items, and thus will occupy more inventory space.
  • When your ship is destroyed or remote-collected all barter items on it will be lost.
  • Each player may see different available trade routes.

4.2. Explore/Supply

Island explore/supply actions requires at least one sailor, and the ship must have sufficient rations.

  • Explore: Find items on the island
  • Supply: Find food on the island (restore ship rations)

After an action is performed, you will be unable to perform any explore/supply actions for 20 minutes. There is a probability that the exploration/search may fail, and will still consume ship rations without any yield.

Note:

  • You must be steering the ship to perform island trade. You cannot perform island trade if you are not on a ship, so you cannot merely swim to an island and trade.
  • The trade item must be in ship inventory, not on your personal inventory. If you forgot to put it into your ship, you’ll need to return to a wharf manager.
  • Ship remote collection may destroy items in the ship’s inventory.
  • You cannot explore/supply if your ship’s rations is below 100.

5. Bosses

5.1. Khan (Guild Boss)

5.1.1. The Fight

Khan is a new guild boss introduced in the great ocean update.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQgPVGpLcCA&feature=youtu.be

Khan is summoned in the Eye of Oquilla, an island located north of Lema (in Ross sea). Special cannons ([길드] 괴수잡이 대포 조립 세트) will be needed in this boss fight, which can be bought from guild manager for 1mil guild funds. Cannonballs cost 100k guild funds each. There is a guild manager conveniently located on the island.

You can also exchange Old Moon Combat/Life Seals for the cannon and cannonballs.

The cannons behave similar to most other cannons, but with some additional unique features.

The cannon has the following firing modes:

  • Regular shot (fire using RMB)
  • Rapid fire (switch to this mode by pressing “X”)
  • Overcharged shot (fire using RMB)

When firing regular shots, you’ll build up a charge counter, which influences the damage of rapid fire and overcharged shots. The counter is depleted upon using overcharged shot or rapid fire.

For overcharged shots, near shots (where the cannon’s barrel is lowered to its lowest) do more damage than long-distance shots at the maximum charge. The damage is influenced by the charge counter. After overcharged shot is used, the cannon will enter cooldown for a longer period of time than regular shots.

Charge0123
Damage multiplier (Long-distance)3x20x30x30x
Damage multiplier (Near)3x20x30x50x

Rapid fire can only be used if you have charge counter of 2 or more.

Charge234
Rapid fire shots3510

Notes:

  • Khan periodically spawns towers that can recover its health, you should destroy those towers as quickly as possible.
  • If the cannon is destroyed, all the cannonballs on it will be lost.
  • The cannon can be moved.
  • You can dismount from cannon even if the cannon is not yet reloaded.
  • Like Well, Khan spawns Lopter-like monsters. You can kill these with normal combat skills.
  • Like Well, Khan has an instant-kill attack which you need to dodge. The attack is choreographed as a large red circle.
  • You do not need ships to attack Khan, however you do need them to reach the island (unless you use skills that can teleport people such as “Command to gather”).
  • Other players not in the guild can be damaged by Khan.
  • Khan will disappear after 30 minutes after summoning.

5.1.2. Summoning Khan

To get the Khan summon scroll you need to:

  1. Complete quest “달의 눈, 칸의 심장을 찾아” (last quest in sailing main quest-line) so that NPC 카닐라 델카스 will allow you to exchange items.
  2. Collect 10 Blue Wave Crystals (푸른빛 파도의 결정), and exchange for a piece of the summon scroll.
  3. Collect 9 scrolls and arrange it in a square pattern. You will obtain an item “미완성된 레아나르의 천체도”
  4. Exchange this item to obtain [길드] 레아나르의 천체도 (pick the corresponding size). This scroll will summon Khan.

푸른빛 파도의 결정 can be obtained from guild missions.

NPC 카닐라 델카스 is located in Eye of Oquilla (at the top of the island).

Recommended amount of players:

  • Small summon: 20
  • Medium: 30
  • Large: 40
  • Extra Large: 50

Note:

  • The Ghost ship 콕스 해적단의 그림자 망령 (Cox Pirate’s Shadow Ghost) also drops pieces of the scroll (you need to assemble 5 of them to make a summon scroll) used to summon another boss which drop a piece of the item used in step 3.
  • The amount of blue wave crystals required was reduced in 4 September KR patch.
  • Blue wave crystals are awarded in gathering-type guild missions in 10 September KR patch.

5.1.3. Drops

The material to make Khan’s heart (응축된 칸의 마력) is a possible drop from the guild boss. There are 3 variants of Khan’s heart.

Notes:

  • You can also purchase 응축된 칸의 마력 using sea coins from Ravinia at Crow’s Nest.
  • In the 10 September KR update, two additional variants of Khan’s Heart were added. The original one is renamed to 칸의 심장 : 파괴.

5.2. Cox Pirate’s Shadow Ghost

The Cox Pirate’s Shadow Ghost is a random encounter. This monster can be solo-ed, however it’s best to fight it using a boat with captain-controlled cannons, such as an Epheria Caravel/Galleass.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl9PojCSbV0

Battle tips:

  • The Cox Pirate’s Shadow Ghost is non-aggressive, and will only retaliate if you attack it.
  • You should only attack the ghost ship once it starts moving the first time it appears, because for the first few seconds after it spawns it is invulnerable to damage until it begins moving.
  • It’s better to circle around the ghost ship to bait it to chase you to avoid taking damage, because it can do fairly large amounts of damage if you are unprepared. The ghost ship will not fire its cannons while its moving.
  • If you are a substantial distance away from the ghost ship, charging the cannon for a few seconds will allow your cannonballs to hit the ship.

Notes:

  • If you are hunting the ghost ship (e.g. to collect ship materials), you’d want to have audio enabled. A few seconds before the ship appears, the background music will change abruptly, and you should stop your boat immediately to avoid accidentally moving your ship too far away (and causing it to despawn).

The following items are known to drop from Cox Pirate’s Shadow Ghost:

5.3. Cox Pirate’s Ghost

This boss is summoned by using the scroll obtained from combining 5x 콕스해적단의 망령 소환서 조각 (dropped from Cox Pirate’s Shadow Ghost).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GAFDalnCZg

Notes:

  • The same tactics can be used as with Cox Pirate’s Shadow Ghost.
  • This boss has a lot of HP, however it can be solo-ed if you have enough firepower. Ships with at least 2 cannons per side such as Epheria Caravel/Galleass strongly recommended.
  • Boss despawns 30 minutes after summon.

The following items are known to drop from Cox Pirate’s Shadow Ghost:

This is a new island located in the Ross Sea, north of Lema island.

7.1. Treasure Chests

Note: This information is derived from KR patch notes.

Every 3 hours, chests will appear in the beach area of the island. These chests can be opened with silver keys.

During the environment change where the chests appear, explosions will appear in the vicinity and any adventurers on the beach at that time will be instantly killed (there will be no EXP penalty when this happens).

According to KR patch notes, the chests drop the following:
